Composition scholarship

The composition scholar will sing with the Gallery Choir to understand how best to write for singers. In consultation with the Director of Music, the scholar attends all choir services, rehearsals and concerts:

  • Thursdays: 7.30-9.30pm rehearsal

  • Sundays: 10.15-10.45am rehearsal, 11am-12.30pm Solemn Mass

  • One midweek (evening) mass per month

  • Special services, such as for Christmas and Holy Week/Easter

  • Termly concerts

The scholar will be remunerated separately for any pieces performed by the choir. The composition scholar receives 6 free composition lessons with acclaimed composer Stephanie Martin, associate professor of music at York University.

Experience

The scholarships are open to any students over the age of 16 enrolled in school, college, or university. The successful candidate will have some experience of composition, most likely through a university music program. However, no formal experience is necessary; the Director of Music will be looking for potential more than proven ability.

Application

We encourage you to submit an application as soon as possible using the form here. Applications will be reviewed beginning Friday, September 30.

Auditions will be held in early October at the Church of St. Mary Magdalene. Candidates will be asked to share and discuss examples of their work. They will also be asked to sing a prepared work, as well as sight-reading and aural tests.
