Christian Education at SMM

Christian Education at SMM takes many forms. Adults are invited to participate in one of the several on-going or occasional programmes. Children are able to attend Sunday School during both the 9.30 and 11 o’clock liturgies. Children and adults often do their best learning, however, by simply engaging in the work of worship and liturgy. Therefore people of all ages have the opportunity to participate in the liturgy as a singer, musician, or liturgical server.

Sunday School

The 9:30 Sunday School has begun again for Fall 2009. The program is for young children ages 2 – 5 and features stories, crafts, music and play. We go down to the children’s room during the psalm and return at the offertory. We will have a program every Sunday between now and Christmas, except for Thanksgiving and Folk Masses. All children are very welcome. The adult leaders are Fr Paul, Sally-Beth and Avery MacLean, and Jennifer Mitchell (with help from others). We will explore the Genesis creation story during September and the story of Joseph in October and November. If you have any questions, please get in touch with one of the leaders.

Our programme is based on the power of story. Children (generally ranging in age from 5 to 14) learn about the love of God in Jesus Christ through Bible stories and discussion reinforced by imaginative arts and crafts, drama and music.

A creative programme based on story telling, music and crafts is also available for young children ages 2 5. It takes place in our newly renovated children¹s room during the 9:30 service. All children are welcome.

At the 9.30 service, children (and parents!) can also take part in our Orff Ensemble.

Programmes for Christian Education and Formation for Adults

The Meditation Group
This group meets every other Monday to explore methods of meditation from the Christian tradition. They gather in the lounge after the 6 p.m. Mass and enjoy a light supper after their session.

Learning the Rosary
The Rosary is an ancient and well-used form of contemplative prayer. A small group gathers after the Solemn Mass on Sundays (around 12.45 p.m.) near the statue of Our Lady to practise this venerable devotion. For more information, please speak with Kim Kendrick or Phyllis McCurdy.

Wednesday Bible Study
After the 10.00 a.m. Wednesday Mass, congregants gather downstairs for refreshments. After a suitable time to catch up and enjoy cookies, tea or coffee, the group engages in a Bible study lead by the clergy.

The Chant Club
The interest in learning about Gregorian Chant inspired the Ritual Choir to create a more informal venue for learning about and practising chant. They meet bi-weekly on Sunday afternoons in the choir room. Go here for more information about the club.
